Very Pleasant, Maybe A Little Weak

I've used/tasted the Signature Smooth Columbian beans and they are definitely smooth with little acidity. I usually drink quite rich dark roasts and go for the high caffeine beans but I do like the flavour to be smooth and chocolatey rather than burnt and acidic.

The beans grind as expected and fill the kitchen with that lovely fresh coffee fragrance. I make my coffee in a cafetierre because I like control of strength and a couple of large mugs-full. I made it up using two heaped desertspoons of coffee but I found it too weak in flavour. The next time I used three heaped desertspoons and the flavour was richer and deeper but without bitterness.

I enjoyed the coffee but as I'm using a third more than usual, this works out a third more expensive than my usual coffee beans.

A smooth blend with plenty of sweetness and the characteristic nuttiness of Colombian coffee. An easy drinker with no bitterness.

A 100% arabica, medium roasted super smooth filter style blend, with a perfect combination of Colombian, Honduran and Brazilian coffees. This is a smooth balanced blend, with plenty of sweetness, working really well as a black filter or paired with milk or milk alternatives for a white coffee.

Please note caffeine levels vary from batch to batch as well as with the grind type and brew method. 300-400mg of caffeine is the max RDA, depending on your weight. We recommend swapping to a half-caf or decaf from 3pm.

Method: The blend's balance shines in filter brewing. Pour steadily to extract the hazelnut and chocolate sweetness.

Method: Creates a smooth, easy-drinking cup perfect for any time of day when you want full caffeine.

Understanding Caffeine Strength

The most important factor affecting caffeine content is the weight of coffee used, not the brewing method. Here's how it works:

  • More coffee = More caffeine: Using 30g (6.5 tablespoons) instead of 22g (5 tablespoons) increases caffeine by approximately 36%
  • Brewing method matters less: The extraction efficiency varies only slightly between methods
  • Personal control: You can easily adjust caffeine levels by changing the coffee dose

Quick Caffeine Reference:

  • Light caffeine (under 50mg): Single espresso from any coffee, or any decaf brew
  • Moderate caffeine (50-150mg): Double espresso, standard V60, half caf options
  • Higher caffeine (150mg+): French press with full dose, or increasing coffee weight in any method

Grind Size Guide:

  • Fine (like table salt): For espresso machines - allows proper extraction under pressure
  • Medium (like caster sugar): For pour over methods like V60 - balanced extraction
  • Coarse (like sea salt): For French press - prevents over-extraction during long steeping

Pro Tips:

  1. For stronger caffeine: Increase coffee dose rather than over-extracting
  2. For milder caffeine: Choose half caf or decaf, or reduce coffee weight
  3. Consistent dosing: Use scales for repeatable caffeine levels, but tablespoons work in a pinch
  4. Time awareness: Remember our recommendation to switch to half caf or decaf from 3pm for better sleep
  5. Grind fresh: Always grind just before brewing for the best flavour and caffeine extraction

All caffeine levels are lab-tested estimates based on 4.5g per tablespoon. Individual sensitivity varies, and we recommend staying within 300-400mg daily depending on your weight and tolerance.

How does caffeine work?

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increasing alertness and reducing fatigue.

How long does caffeine stay in your system?

It takes 6 hours for 50% of the caffeine in your system to be metabolised and 12 hours for 75%. So a full caf afternoon coffee is still in your system at bedtime.
